Work for us

Our academic and professional services staff are fundamental to our success, coming to us from all over the globe to influence the lives of our 40,000 students in London, Dubai, Mauritius and Malta – and every city in between, thanks to our groundbreaking research, partnerships and practice.

Driven by honesty, integrity, ambition and mutual support, our Middlesex University staff community forms the foundation of our world-class institution. They work on a global scale to harness the creative, innovative and enterprising spirit that has guided our university since its inception.

It's about making a lasting and positive contribution to the world we live in. Are you ready to join us? You'll become a part of a friendly and stimulating working environment and, in return, enjoy one of the country's best and most flexible employee benefits packages.

Pay

We have developed a modern and progressive pay structure that rewards our staff with highly competitive salaries.

Common salary principles across the University include:

  • Equal pay for equal value
  • Opportunities for career progression
  • The potential for employees to earn more for exceptional performance, through our Contribution Pay Scheme.

Pension

Professional Services staff are contractually enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), which offers a guaranteed pension when you retire, based on your length of service and career average salary.

Teaching staff are contractually enrolled into the Teachers' Pensions scheme, which offers a guaranteed pension when you retire based on your length of service and your final salary. Changes will be made to the Teachers' Pension scheme in April 2015. For more details, see the Teachers' Pensions  website.

We do not have a defined retirement age and staff may continue to work beyond the state pension age.

If you choose to retire, you can draw your pension at anytime between age 55 and 75. We also operate a flexible retirement policy, meaning that you may apply to reduce your hours and start drawing your pension at anytime between age 55 and 75.

Employee wellbeing

We take the wellbeing of our staff and students seriously and are continually improving the range of facilities and support available. In 2012, we were the first university to be awarded the Mayor for London's Healthy Workplace Excellence Award.

Some of the key benefits designed to help maintain and support employees' wellbeing include:

Annual leave We offer 25-30 days of annual leave to professional services staff and 35 days for academic staff, professors and senior managers. In addition we offer eight Bank Holidays and are usually closed over the Christmas period.
Family-friendly initiatives We offer 52 weeks' maternity and adoption leave and generous maternity and adoption pay. The non-primary carer may take two weeks' paid paternity leave with the option of up to 26 weeks' additional paternity leave. Parental leave and the opportunity to take a career break are also available. Carers may take up to five days' paid dependency leave. We operate a childcare voucher scheme that allows parents to make tax savings on childcare. We also have a nursery at our Hendon campus.
Flexible working Any member of staff may request to change their working pattern or hours. Where possible, taking into consideration the needs of the business, we support compressed hours, job-sharing, part-time working and homeworking one or two days a week.

Your development

We are committed to developing our staff both for their current roles and to equip them to face the challenges and changes of the future. The development needs of individuals are met through a comprehensive range of professional, personal, leadership and management development that is linked to the needs of schools/services and supports the achievement of the University's corporate objectives.

Your development will start with your induction and will continue through in house courses, seminars, workshops, online modules and coaching. You are also encouraged to make use of learning opportunities wherever they present themselves in the everyday environment. This might include networking, projects, new work activities, on the job learning and using learning resources. Academic staff are expected to undertake scholarly activity in their field and have four weeks of self-managed time for such activity each year.

Occupational health

Staff have access to occupational health and counselling services. Park Clinic, the University's own centre for complementary medicines and therapies, offers many treatments, including acupuncture and massage at discounted rates.

Catering

There are a range of cafes and shops for the use of staff and students on each of the University's campuses, providing a variety of healthy, fresh food.

Sports

We have a wide range of sporting facilities for staff, such as a competitively-priced gym, an Astroturf pitch, floodlit multi-sports courts, a real tennis court and the opportunity to join in a variety of team sports and a running club.

The University runs a variety of health-promoting events, such as lunchtime walks, yoga, and Pilates.

Working environment

In 2012, our state-of-the-art campus was shortlisted for the University Facilities Award in the annual The Guardian University Awards; our Hatchcroft Building was awarded an "Excellent" rating for its environmental sustainability credentials.

We are working towards having facilities among the best anywhere, with more than £200 million invested in creating one of London's biggest and best campuses – part of our commitment to providing an excellent student experience.

We have created outstanding learning environments for teaching and research, including state-of-the-art laboratories, workshops and modern lecture theatres. We've also added new spaces where you can relax, drink and eat with colleagues. We are listening to our staff to continuously improve the working accommodation.

The campus has a variety of outdoor spaces to enjoy a walk; numerous cafes; a supermarket and a bar, as well as all the facilities that Hendon has to offer.

Travel

In our effort to promote green travel, we do not offer parking facilities to new staff. However, Hendon has excellent transport links (PDF) and we offer an interest-free annual season ticket loan, a motorcycle loan and a Cycle to Work scheme.

A relocation package may be available for senior staff and difficult-to-recruit roles.

How to apply

All applications for vacancies must be on our online application form and in response to an advertised job. We do not accept speculative CVs or applications.
